What Exactly Is Dry Needling?

Dry needling, in contrast to popular belief, is distinct from acupuncture. While both therapies share similarities, dry needling is grounded in Western medical and research methodologies, diverging from the principles and philosophies that underpin acupuncture.

During dry needling treatments at our clinic, practitioners use sterile acupuncture needles to stimulate affected tissues. Unlike acupuncture, dry needling involves the use of “dry” needles, meaning no substances are injected into the body through the needles.

This approach creates an environment that supports the body’s natural healing processes, aiming to alleviate pain and enhance movement. Dry needling is believed to modify the communication pathways between the brain and muscles, facilitating a return to more normal movement patterns.

Is Dry Needling Painful?

Despite its name, many patients worry that dry needling may be painful. Yet, a vast majority of our patients at our Birmingham & SolihullCoventry & Warwickshire and London clinic experience little to no discomfort during and post-procedure.
Our highly skilled physical therapists strive to ensure the process is as comfortable as possible! A minuscule proportion of patients might experience a somewhat uncomfortable response when the needle is inserted, causing a shortened, hypersensitive muscle to ‘grip’ the needle, leading to a sensation akin to muscle cramping.

This response typically feels like a brief muscle cramp and should subside shortly after the treatment. In extremely rare instances, some soreness could persist for 24-48 hours post-treatment. If any discomfort continues, home remedies such as applying ice or heat and staying hydrated can be helpful.
